1926-1995
c. 1961
Woodblock
Plate: 260 x 870 mm
The first of three exciting prints in 19-21: Japan Evolving by Hodaka Yoshida, and the first modern Japanese work in this exhibition, this sōsaku-hanga (creative print) comes from the 'Primitive' phase of Hodaka's works. The form of the cart is hinted at by the composition, but is not truly there. When one searches for it in the detail all that can be found are more or less random shapes, circles and lines, suggesting the form, energy and movement that the artist wishes to convey without it's absolute presence.
A strong composition from this early master of Japanese abstraction. The print itself is in average condition with some soiling and wrinkling.
