Utagawa Hiroshige

1797-1858

9th station: Odawara (Crossing the Sakawa river at a ford)

FROM THE SERIES: THE FIFTY-THREE STATIONS OF THE TŌKAIDŌ

c. 1960 reprint of an 1832 work

Woodblock

Plate: 300 x 200 mm (540 x 380 mm with boarder)

This beautiful print is a reprint from perhaps the most famous and certainly the most popular ukiyo-e series, the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido by Hiroshige. It depicts the first post station that travellers came to when they exited Edo on the road to Kyoto, at the castle town of Odawara. The castle itself in the upper right corner of the image, nestled at the base of a tree covered hill with mountains towering high above. In the foreground ferry crews work to carry travelers across a river.

This unframedreprint of unknown age (most likely mid-20th century) from the original c1832 work is in excellent condition.
