Utagawa kunimasa

1848-1920

untitled

1888

Woodblock

Plate: 230 x 360 mm

This vibrant and brightly colored print features the actors Nakamura Sikan and Ichikawa Sadaji.

It is likely a scene from the 1888 production of a kabuki play called Kagotsurube Sato no Eizame, a tragic story of a wealthy but lowly born and disfigured merchant and his unrequited love for a famous courtesan.

This original, unframed, print is in good condition for it's age, with some staining and wrinkles.
