Iwafuji Berating Onoe

Woodblock

Plate: 356 x 669 mm

This print depicts a scene from the kabuki play  (Japanese dance drama) "Kagamiyama Kokyô no Nishikie" which tells the story of a rivalry between ladies in waiting to a samurai. The particular scene shown here comes from the 3rd Act, where, after Onoe discovers that a precious Buddhist statue she had been entrusted with has been replaced with a sandal (the result of Iwafuji's plotting), the malicious Iwafuji uses the sandal to beat Onoe for her 'transgression' in front of the other women of the household, sparking a series of unfortunate events.

The plain background and simple composition of this image magnifies the brilliance of the figures and their stunning kimono's and obi's (sashes).

This original unframed print is in good condition for it's age, with some slight soiling, minor holes, and damage to the edges.
