Kunisada (utagawa toyokuni iii)

1786-1865

untitled

Woodblock Print

Age Unknown - contemporary to artist

241 x  369

A samurai, wearing a black jacket (kataginu) embroidered on the shoulders with what appear to be silver lotus flowers, stands with sword drawn, on guard, with his blade facing towards enemies to his left, the tips of their blades just visible, while he faces towards another foe to his right.

Undoubtedly originally part of a triptych, and possibly a kabuki scene (Japanese theater - often dance dramas), this  original unframed print has some damage (small holes, damage to edges, foxing) consistent with age
