Likely the earliest print in the exhibition, this work, which was probably originally part of a triptych, depicts a battle with two samurai locked in hand to hand combat in the lower right corner. In the lower left an archer sits astride a black horse as other warriors move to join the fray in the lower center and archers prepare to return fire in the mid ground. In the background across the water we see soldiers sheltered behind wooden shields, while at the top, center, a samurai waiving a fan sits perched in a tree, watching the screen below.
An excellent scene with energy and action
An original, unframed print, some water damage, holes, and lost surface top right, and damage to paper at rare, consistent with age
